In which I’m totally thinking about you guys!

I’ve been watching the news and it looks like Iowa’s even damper than necessary.

One of my co-workers just sent me this link and said, “Looks like you got outta there just in time.”

I checked Fairfield weather and y’all don’t seem to be swimming yet, but my thoughts are with you anyway. Can I get all my babies in Iowa to check in and tell me you’re not drowning?!

All afternoon the DM tv stations have had nothing on but flood coverage and press conferences about the flood. The are evacuating the flood plain (including downtown) today as they expect the river to crest tonight.

If you go to http://www.gazetteonline.com/ you can find out about Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. They have been suffering for days. Not that the tv stations in DM give a shit about them.

But me, I’m high and dry. Until cocktail hour. Thanks for checking in!

“High and dry until cocktail hour”! LOL! Glad to hear you’re alive. *smooch* -m

Watching Cedar Rapids on the news last night was heartwrenching. I wonder if Joe’s dad is okay.

I’ve been thinkin’ the same thing. -m

Fairfield’s fine (well it’s not flooded anyway), but any river town is suffering right now. Parts of Ottumwa have been underwater, Cedar Rapids and Coralville are in bad shape. How many 500-year floods do you figure you should get in a lifetime? That’s what they called the 1993 flood and this one is shaping up to be a lot worse.
Search youtube for ‘iowa flood 2008’ and you can see examples. Between tornado warnings and flood warnings we don’t know whether to blow away or drown.

I find it odd that none of the (fairly limited) news I’ve seen calling this a 500-year Flood have mentioned the one in ’93. Forget so soon? -m

Still alive, although my route to CR from mechanicsville via 30 is pretty much shot so I’m stuck at home having to call customers on my cell. “No, you didnt get the reporting error because you have a virus. Our NOC was moved to Des Moines and will be down. Go have a coke and a smile and gfto my phone”

We just had a little stealth flood action here. The creek came up during the night, and if it wasn’t for the fine layer of mud left on the grasses we’d never have known. The unmown grass at the back of the lot (about 6 ft high already!) proved to be a nice flood gauge as you could tell how high it got by the mud thermometer left behind on the stems.

In some places–IC area and Des Moines, for example–it seems to be far, far beyond 1993 levels. But a friend in the Keo area says so far it doesn’t seem as bad as ’93 there.

Iowa City is divided; the bridges are closed. We’re probably going to lose the bridge to Hancher. The entire arts campus is under water. The Sutliff bridge went down on Friday… glad I went there a week ago with a friend. The University has suspended non-essential operations, so I guess I’m on vacation this week. It’s pretty bad, but if we don’t get the storms they’re calling for today, the water may start to recede. It’s waaaay worse than ’93 here. Fortunately, I live on top of a hill, but the bottom of our road that t-bones Dubuque and the river is under water and has been closed for over a week. I need to get my butt out and take pics. Anyway, like PJ, I’m high and dry, too, until cocktail hour.

Damn, it sounds like a wet mess. I’m glad you’re all still dry, though. Big love to all my waterlogged babies! smooch
