As you know, I read voraciously. I don’t restrict myself to ebooks, but an awful lot of my reading is in e-format.

I started reading ebooks way back in the day – ten years ago, now – when I got my first palm-top computer. At that time, it was mostly Project Gutenberg stuff; books that were old enough to be in the public domain and could therefore be distributed freely. I read classics, mostly, because that’s what there was, and loaded up on reference material like the constitution, the bill of rights, and other items that might come in handy during a discussion in a bar somewhere.

Now, of course, you can get new titles in ebook format, directly from the publisher, and there are a variety of websites that sell great ebooks. Here are my favorites:

fictionwise.com has had my heart since they came online. In the beginning, they sold only shorts – science fiction shorts. I’ve loved them ever since, even though they’ve grown up to sell full-length books in every genre as well as sci-fi shorts. I’ve actually been interviewed twice by major publications (such as the Washington Post) on behalf of Fictionwise; I’ve been a major supporter of theirs for so long that when reporters want to talk to “regular ebook readers,” the guys send ’em my way.

mobipocket.com doesn’t get as much of my custom, but I do use their reader as much as I possibly can. I do buy books from them now and again, of course, and I bought their reader as well.

memoware.com used to be the largest free library on the ‘net, and I got most of my public domain e-texts from them when I still carried a Newton. Now they’re a full-fledged ebookstore, but I’ll always be fond of them for being my first ebook pusher.

baen.com is the home of Webscriptions.net, were you can buy hot-off-the-presses new science fiction and fantasy from renowned publisher Baen Books, before the books are even out in treeware form!

If you have a portable device, the ebook world is your oyster. Go forth and dig it, my babies!
